Steven Wray read music at the University of Oxford. He later participated in the piano masterclasses of Professor Hans Graf at the International Summer Musical Academy at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and also enrolled as an advanced student at the Musik-Hochschule in Vienna. As a young artist he was invited to perform in Live Music Now! Concerts (an initiative set up by Yehudi Menuhin) and in the Park Lane Group’s contemporary music concerts appearing at both London’s Barbican and the South Bank Centre.
He has performed throughout the United Kingdom and Europe in solo recitals, concerto performances and also as a pianist in chamber music, song recitals and various ensembles. He has given quite a number of first performances of new music, has made several premiere recordings, and has received dedications of new works from a number of composers. In more mainstream repertoire, his wide-ranging survey of Romanticism in 2004-05 in London was warmly described as a “highly enterprising and imaginative” series of concerts by Jeremy Siepmann, editor, PIANO magazine.
Steven Wray is in demand as a teacher and holds posts at Westminster School and at Westminster Abbey Choir School in the centre of London.
