Michael Newman B.Mus (1st Class Hons) M.Mus LTCL

Michael’s early musical education was as a chorister in Coventry Cathedral Choir and then as violinist and violist with the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra. He was awarded the Stanley Hails Memorial Prize for the best University of London Music or Maths degree before postgraduate studies.

He has followed a dual career as a teacher and performer. As a freelance violist he has performed with some of Britains’ leading professional orchestras. He has been a member of contemporary music groups and chamber groups appearing in concert and also BBC broadcasts. He has played with backing strings for a range of artists including Rod Stewart. He has also arranged string tracks for Creation records.

His instrumental teaching experience ranges from beginner level to diploma candidates in a range of prominent schools in London and the surrounding area. He was a part-time lecturer at Goldsmiths’ College in the University of London for many years and currently runs and directs an amateur string orchestra. He has adjudicated at music festivals and for school awards.

Michael has been an examiner for OCR ‘A’ levels for 25 years in a number of areas including performance. He has examined for Trinity including their diploma programme since 2011 having visited centres in all parts of the UK and various countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
